Zhupa engages with UAMD students on fact-checking and public communication

TIRANA, March 26 /ATA/ –The role of public communication and the importance of double-checking information from reliable sources were the highlight of a meeting held with students from the Department of Public Administration at the Faculty of Political Science and Law at the ‘Aleksandër Moisiu’ University in Durrës.

In a recent discussion, Valbona Zhupa, Director-General of ATA, highlighted the challenges of the fast-paced information age, pointing out that the spread of fake news remains a major threat to both the public and institutions.
She stressed that the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) has become an important partner and a reliable source of information for numerous international news agencies, providing double-checked information and citing official sources.

During the discussion, Zhupa emphasized the importance of distinguishing between accurate and fake news, the vital role of official sources in building credibility, practical approaches for students to verify information before sharing it, and the risks associated with the spread of misinformation due to insufficient fact-checking.

Zhupa underscored that, at a time when social media is the primary source of information for young people, it is essential for them to develop critical thinking and turn to reliable and professional sources.

“Do not spread fake news due to haste or negligence in verification. Every piece of information must be filtered through reliable sources,” Zhupa stated.

The session was warmly welcomed by the students, who showed keen interest in understanding how news is created, how it is verified, and the professional standards that ensure its accuracy and reliability.

This activity was held as is part of ATA’s initiative to raise awareness about combating disinformation and to promote a culture of accurate information, especially among the youth.
