Muslims in Albania mark Eid al-Fitr, performing holiday prayer at Skanderbeg Square

TIRANA, March 20/ATA/ Muslim community celebrates end of Ramadan today, the Eid al-Fitr.

One hour after sunrise, believers performed the Duha prayer.

Since the early hours of the morning, many believers gathered in Tirana’s central square for the Muslim prayer.

Head of the Muslim Community of Albania Bujar Spahiu congratulated the believers and gave a speech which focused on wars.

Spahiu emphasized that, “The prayers today are for all those who suffer, children who grow up in fear, and peoples who want peace and justice.”

Spahiu said that, “The conflicts, wars and injustices continue to take the lives of innocent people. There are families who today do not feel the joy of this prayer, of this holy day, but the pain of loss and the uncertainty of the future.”

“The message of the Islamic religion is crystal clear: Islam is a religion of peace, mercy, justice and solidarity,” Spahiu emphasized.

As a pillar of Islam, fasting (abstinence) unites all worshippers, bridging the gap between rich and poor.

The morning commenced with distributing Sadaqah Fitr to the needy, followed by the community gathering in the square.

The believers wear new clothes for Eid al-Fitr, visit relatives and friends and greet each other by wishing “Happy Eid al-Fitr”.

The meal is traditionally accompanied by a sweet known as “seviyan”

After a lovely family meal, the believers spent the rest of the day catching up with friends and loved ones.
