TIRANA, March 17/ATA/ The Albanian Parliament approved today, with 79 votes in favor and 1 abstention, a resolution declaring Iran a state sponsor of terrorism.
Chairman of the Committee on Europe and Foreign Affairs Igli Hasani said during his speech in the Parliament that this resolution is directly related to the national security of our country and to the role that Albania has chosen to play in the Euro-Atlantic security architecture.
“For Albania, this issue is not just a geopolitical debate. In 2022, Albanian institutions faced a serious cyber-attack on state infrastructure. It was a serious and unprecedented act against a NATO member country and against democratic institutions,” Hasani stressed.
Hasani said that, “The investigations and assessments by international partners linked this attack to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
According to Hasani, this event and many others show that threats to states today do not appear only in conventional forms, but also through cyber and hybrid operations that aim to hit institutions and their functioning.
“The resolution we are discussing today aims to clearly express the stance of the institutions of the Republic of Albania against these practices and to confirm our commitment against terrorism and in defense of the rules-based international order”, he affirmed, while noting that Albania has made it crystal clear its position that its national security and the integrity of democratic institutions are not negotiable.
“Attacks on the institutions of a sovereign state cannot be relativized and cannot go unanswered. By adopting this resolution, the Albanian Parliament reconfirms the fact that our country will stand by its allies and partners in defense of security, stability and international order”, concluded Hasani. /e.i/j.p/p.s./
