TIRANA, March 2 /ATA/ – President Bajram Begaj on Monday marked the 582nd anniversary of the League of Lezha, describing it as a defining moment in Albania’s medieval and national history.
Begaj said the League represented a historic turning point “where unity triumphed over division, responsibility over personal ambition, and the common interest over individual interest.”
“Today, 582 years later, it remains a standard of political and institutional conduct – a reminder that our strength as a nation has not rested solely on bravery, but on coordination, vision and responsible leadership,” he wrote.
He added that “under the vision of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albanians acted as one body and became part of the European history of resistance, dignity and freedom.”
The League of Lezha was convened in 1444 as a political and military alliance of Albanian noble families against the Ottoman Empire. Representatives of principalities from across the country took part, with the aim of uniting their forces against the common enemy.
