Albania, Hungary to exchange military attachés this year

TIRANA, Feb 23 /ATA/ – Albania and Hungary will exchange military attachés within 2026 as part of efforts to deepen defence cooperation, Defence Minister Pirro Vengu said during an official visit to Budapest on Monday.

Vengu met his Hungarian counterpart, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, and said the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in defence industry, innovation and military education.

He described Hungary as a strong NATO ally, a clear supporter of Albania’s European Union integration and a contributor to stability and security in Southeast Europe.

Under the agreement, the exchange of military attachés is expected to take place within 2026, a step Vengu said would enhance strategic coordination, increase mutual trust and advance interoperability between the two countries’ armed forces.

Bilateral cooperation is entering what he called a new and more ambitious phase. Albania aims to benefit from Hungary’s experience in modernising defence capabilities and the military industry, while cooperation will also expand to include training of Air Force personnel.

“The partnership represents a concrete example of cooperation that builds tangible capacities and contributes to collective security, in line with Euro-Atlantic commitments and Albania’s path toward EU membership,” Vengu said.
