TIRANA, Feb 20 /ATA/ – The government will keep electric scooters off public roads across Albania until a clear legal framework and adequate infrastructure are in place, Interior Minister Albana Koçiu said on Friday, calling the measure the “right decision” to protect public safety.
Speaking at a news conference, Koçiu said the ban, introduced in October 2025, was a right decision and it followed a rise in injuries linked to scooter accidents, many of which were treated at the country’s main trauma hospital.
“If you ask me again whether it is the right decision, I will tell you it is the right decision to halt the use of electric scooters until their mobility is properly regulated,” she said.
Koçiu said that by October 2025 more than 990 cases related to scooter accidents had been recorded at the Trauma Hospital, not including injured individuals who did not seek hospital treatment.
She cited excessive speeds and use without age restrictions as key causes of accidents, affecting both riders and pedestrians.
The Minister said authorities are working on new regulations but warned the issue is complex and will require not only amendments to road legislation but also investment in appropriate infrastructure and improved user awareness.
“Safety and life are more important than getting to work on time,” Koçiu said, adding that the government’s priority is to significantly reduce incidents involving scooters.
