TIRANA, Jan 18 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Sunday that greater coordination and institutional capacity are essential as Albania advances negotiations to join the European Union, describing accession as a historic and strategic objective for the country.
Speaking at his “Let’s Talk” podcast on Sunday, Rama reviewed key political developments of the week, including lengthy meetings of the government and the ruling Socialist Party’s parliamentary group focused on priorities for the 2026 political year.
Rama said both meetings aimed to set policy benchmarks for 2026, with the cabinet concentrating on programme continuity and implementation timelines across sectors, while the parliamentary group focused on the need to strengthen capacity in support of EU negotiations.
“This means more coordination, more interaction, more organization and, above all, greater focus on this historic and strategic objective for Albania,” Rama said.
He warned that the accession process would become increasingly demanding, intensifying not year by year but month by month, due to the volume of EU-related legislation requiring approval through public consultation, government review and parliament.
Rama said the legislative workload was unprecedented for Albania’s decision-making institutions but expressed confidence that the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group would be able to meet the challenge.
He added that discussions also addressed the need to strengthen public information efforts, improve communication with party members and supporters, and step up efforts to counter what he described as widespread misinformation surrounding the EU accession process.
Rama said such challenges would not derail Albania’s “irreversible path” toward membership of the European Union.
