TIRANA, Jan 16 /ATA/ Prime Minister, also the Socialist Party leader, Edi Rama said today during the SP parliamentary group meeting that, alongside other ongoing reforms, thought should also be given to forming a task force for constitutional amendments.
Rama emphasized that at the beginning of this mandate, the necessity of reviewing the number of Members of Parliament in Albania was highlighted.
He suggested that the current parliament consisting of 140 MPs, could be downsized to 100, a reform that would sit well with the public and would lead to a more efficient use of resources.
“Our parliament consists of 140 members, but it is entirely feasible to reduce this number to 100. Such a change would sit well with the public and would contribute to the rationalization of resources,” stated the Prime Minister.
He clarified that reducing the number of MPs is not the sole issue to be addressed, as the Constitution also includes other elements that need to be examined by experts in the field, who have the expertise and responsibility to evaluate the necessary amendments.
Rama emphasized the need to revisit various aspects of the Constitution, highlighting that experts with the necessary knowledge should lead this review. He also proposed the establishment of a task force to formally begin discussions on constitutional amendments.
He stressed that such a reform is far more complex than electoral or administrative-territorial reforms and requires more time, commitment, and resources.
“A group must be established to initiate this process. Naturally, it is much more than an electoral reform or an administrative-territorial reform, so it requires much more space, commitment, resources, and so on. But this work must begin,” said Rama.
Rama stated that the goal by the end of the mandate should be to successfully implement a constitutional reform.
