TIRANA, January 12/ATA/ Justice Minister Besfort Lamallari said today that 1,290 convicted people of minor offenses will benefit from the criminal amnesty.
In an interview with reporters, Lamallari also emphasized that many pre-trial detainees will also benefit from the criminal amnesty, for whom the criminal offense will be expunged.
“This is good news for all those convicted who are behind bars for minor criminal offenses and those in pre-trial detention. Specifically, we estimate approximately 1,290 people who benefit from the amnesty. I strongly believe that these people are more useful to return to their families and get rehabilitated because they have served a significant period of the sentence given by the court and the remaining part is considered not in favor of the penitentiary system, nor in favor of the person himself. This is a humane act of the government, an expression of the political will it has taken through this initiative and then with the approval in Parliament, makes it possible for them to return to their homes,” Lamallari said for the public Radio-Television.
The minister emphasized that amnesty is not simply a pardon, but a second chance that society gives to these individuals.
The minister also focused on the recent amendments to the Criminal Code, mentioning the initiatives for the protection of journalists and the media community.
“First, we successfully concluded in 2025 the amendments to the Criminal Code with the intermediate conditions that advance Albania’s journey into the European family”, said Lamallari. /m.q/a.f/r.e/p.s./
