Rama: SPAK does not act as opposition to the government

TIRANA, Dec 30 /ATA/- By Maela Marini/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Tuesday that the Special Structure Against Organized Crime and Corruption (SPAK) does not act as the opposition to the government but is a newly established institution founded through the initiative of the current administration.

At the traditional year-end press conference with journalists, Rama stated that SPAK has been supported by the current governing majority and is guaranteed by this same authority.

“Many have repeatedly vowed to shut it down, yet they are unable to do so because the votes remain with us. SPAK functions as an independent institution, performing its duties like any other, and therefore does not act as the government’s opposition,” Rama stated.

However, he noted that “with the government’s political opposition mired in deep depression, SPAK’s work has become the primary target for the opposition’s attacks on the government.”

“Of course, the 700 political and media ‘pots’ take the results of this entire process and cook up 700 different narratives, a phenomenon Albania is no stranger to. Similar tactics have been seen in other countries, using half-truths to create a smoke screen that blinds the public, overwhelms them with pressure, and spreads deep disinformation,” Rama added.

Rama described it as an outrage calling out the relentless spread of half-truths by individuals who fail to carry out their duties, who cannot act as an effective opposition to the government, and are incapable of challenging the Socialist Party.

“Nobody attempts to conduct any analysis of what is true in all of SPAK’s work. It is entirely different from what is being claimed: SPAK is not the government’s opposition, and its positive and negative aspects should be weighed like those of any other institution, including the government. No one conducts this analysis, which then leads to significant confusion among public opinion,” Rama stated.

On the topic of opposition protests, Rama noted that this division of roles has long been established.

“I remain in the office, the Socialist Party governs, and the others take to the streets outside my office. That is their choice. Albania holds a respectable position in the report on the protection of freedoms, and such demonstrations are part of those freedoms,” Rama said.
