TIRANA, December 24 /ATA/ Minister of Defense Pirro Vengu conducted an inspection visit to the premises of the former military unit in Mollëz, where there is planned to be established the new operational center of the III Battalion of the Northern Infantry Regiment.
During the visit to the Mollëz garrison in Burrel, the minister was accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Land Force and the Colonel of the Northern Infantry Regiment, who presented the infrastructure development plan and the historical, tactical and strategic significance of this area.
This unit has previously served as a garrison and military depot and has had an important role during the war in Kosovo, where there has been conducted training of Kosovo Liberation Army forces.
According to the medium-term plan of the Ministry of Defense, the facility will be completely reconstructed to accommodate a full infantry battalion, further expanding the capacities of the Northern Regiment.
Currently, in Burrel operates a full company, while the goal is to multiply capacities and increase the active force by about 30%, as well as create the first units of the reserve force.
Minister Vengu emphasized that despite the degradation and abandonment of this department over the years, there has already been approved the development master plan, which foresees a comprehensive infrastructural intervention.
The project has been designed with the aim of ensuring that the investment is sustainable, functional and efficient for the fulfillment of operational missions.
The new structure will accommodate about 648 personnel, of which 247 reservists and 401 active personnel, distributed over an area of about 366 hectares. The territory offers very good conditions for training, accommodation, sports and recreational activities, as well as for the construction of polygons and auxiliary grounds.
The area, free from civilian housing, guarantees high security standards and favorable access to electricity and water supply infrastructure.
The main mission of Burrel Battalion will be to prepare, train and maintain operational capacities for the defense of the country.
