TIRANA, Dec 5 /ATA/ The Chairman of the Democratic Party held a meeting on Friday with the allies of the United Opposition Federation.
During the meeting, Berisha announced the launch of a joint effort with his allies to determine the electoral system they consider to be the most appropriate.
In his opening remarks at the round-table with the allies, Berisha noted that the election outcome had been largely defined by the electoral code, although the election-monitoring institutions had issued a series of recommendations aimed at improving the legal framework of the electoral process.
‘We are here specifically to address those recommendations, and to stay committed to them, for they acted with integrity; they were not influenced and they conveyed the truth to the Albanian people. We regard their recommendations as valuable for the electoral process,’ Berisha added.
The head of the Democratic Party emphasised that they will work on the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations.
‘From 1991 to the present day, Albania has had various systems for electing its MPs — from majority-based to proportional and pseudo majority-based system. Most recently, it has been regional. Naturally, I cannot claim that the Democratic Party has not played the principal role in these definitions, together with the Socialist Party, which have been the two main political forces. But in the current situation, I want to assure you of the Democratic Party’s full commitment to jointly determining the system that we, as an opposition political force, consider the most suitable,’ Berisha said.
Berisha stressed that ‘we have our representatives on the Electoral Reform Commission, who will serve as advocates for our proposals, carefully coordinated and agreed upon, which we consider to represent the most appropriate system for elections in Albania.
The Chairman of the Democratic Party further remarked that ‘elections are impossible under Edi Rama,’ and that those who hold a different view ‘either lack a proper understanding of legal electoral principles or, whether deliberately or inadvertently, act as advocates for a sham.
