TIRANA, Dec 3 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha on Wednesday dismissed a series of local meetings launched by Ervin Salianji, a former DP lawmaker, saying any activities outside official forums are strictly private and have no connection to the party.
Speaking at a press conference at DP headquarters, Berisha confirmed that the main opposition party will back its own candidates for the position of Ombudsman, with the parliamentary group set to announce which nominees “best fulfill the role.” He noted that while some candidates may have collected the necessary signatures, the party supports only certain individuals.
Asked about closed candidate lists for parliament, Berisha said they were never better than open lists and described the system as imposed by Prime Minister Edi Rama in 2021.
Berisha emphasized that DP operates under clear statutes and institutional procedures, with debates and meetings within official forums open to all members and leaders. He said any other meetings, including one planned by former MP Ervin Salianji, are personal initiatives with no party affiliation.
“Anyone organising meetings for personal purposes does so entirely in their own interest and has no connection to the party,” Berisha said, noting that such rules are standard practice for political parties worldwide.
