EU Ambassador: Judicial vetting should complete by June 2026

TIRANA, Oct 29 /ATA/ – European Union Ambassador Silvio Gonzato called on Wednesday for Albania to complete the vetting process of judges and prosecutors by June 2026, when its constitutional mandate expires, and condemned recent attacks against the international monitoring mission.

During a visit to the Special Appeals Chamber (KPA) in Tirana, where he met with its chair Sokol Çomo, EU Ambassador Gonzato stressed the importance of finalising all vetting activities within the next eight months.

“The vetting process remains the backbone of justice reform, and its completion is a key step in Albania’s EU accession path,” the EU Delegation in Tirana said in a statement.

It reaffirmed the EU’s firm support for the vetting process and for the International Monitoring Operation (ONM), adding that “recent unjustified attacks and disinformation targeting the ONM and its international observers are unacceptable and aim to undermine trust in the justice system and reform.”
