TIRANA, Oct 20 /ATA/ – By Maela Marini/ Prime Minister Edi Rama announced on Monday that the Digital Identity will be made available to the public at the beginning of next year, describing it as “a significant step for Albania on its pathway toward the technological modernization of socio – economic life.”
During the Digital Identity launch event, Rama highlighted that it is not merely an identification tool but a gateway to a new era of enhanced security and simplified access to services for citizens.
“We have been working for some time with both passion and ambition to develop the Digital Identity, which serves as the cornerstone for a significant technological advancement in the future,” Rama stated.
The Prime Minister stated that the European Union targets 2027 for issuing digital identities to its citizens, but Albania will achieve this milestone earlier, by 2026.
“I stress this not to imply any advantage on our side, but to remind everyone that the leverage technology provides to any country that embraces it and uses it to overcome obstacles—sometimes even historical ones—is truly a blessing of our time,” Rama added.
The Prime Minister highlighted that digital technology, along with the recent advancements in artificial intelligence, enables countries to consider leaping beyond traditional time periods.
Rama commended the efforts of the state-owned company IdentiTek, describing it as a new institution that “is demonstrating daily how a public company can take over from a private firm that previously handled public identity card services.”
He added, “IdentiTek offers more affordable prices, greater efficiency in service quality, and, most importantly, much more innovation in serving both the public and the future of our country. We strongly believe in this company’s potential and ambitious plans for its growth.”
Rama also highlighted the establishment of a new public company, “AlbTrace,” created in collaboration with international partners.
He explained, “This company will enable real-time tracking of all products, significantly improve product control and safety to levels like never before, and substantially reduce informality and its negative impacts—both on quality of life and on public health.”
The Prime Minister expressed full confidence that these two public companies will drive meaningful change and greatly modernize how society operates.
