Health Minister: 94% of first-year medical students sign contracts to work in Albania upon graduation

TIRANA, Oct 6 /ATA/ – Health and Social Welfare Minister Evis Sala said Monday that 94% of first-year medical students have signed contracts committing to work in Albania’s healthcare system after graduation in the country’s public University of Medicine.

Speaking during a ceremony to welcome the first-year medical students at the University of Medicine, Health Minister highlighted the policy as key to curbing the emigration of medical professionals.

“For the first time, medical graduates will work three years in the public health system. I am pleased that 94% of first-year students have already signed the agreement,” she said.

Sala noted that doctors’ salaries have significantly improved, with specialist pay rising from 490 euros in 2013 to a targeted 2,000 euros by 2030.

She also underlined ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure and training, alongside plans to expand cooperation with international medical centers and integrate artificial intelligence into the system.

The ceremony on the beginning of the new academic year was also attended by University Rector Xheladin Draçini, Dean Margarita Gjata, and Professor Agron Ylli.
