TIRANA, Sept 16 /ATA/ – Albania’s biggest challenge on its path toward European Union membership is to “reinvent itself,” Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Tuesday during a joint press conference with EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos and Denmark’s Minister for European Affairs, Marie Bjerre.
“The EU is a blessing for a country like ours and for others in the region,” Rama said, adding that “Afghanistan or Iraq have not had such an opportunity.”
The government head emphasized that EU integration provides access to knowhow and institutional models that help countries build functional states that serve citizens.
“Through the EU, we can acquire all the knowhow and expertise needed to build institutions and a state that delivers for its people. That is something extraordinary,” Rama said.
“To achieve this, the EU offers the tools to reinvent ourselves – as a nation, as a country, and as a state,” he added.
Rama said that the upcoming two years would be critical. “In this process, the EU has already helped us – as the governing majority – begin to reinvent ourselves. The challenge now is to continue this transformation, meeting the demanding requirements of the negotiation chapters, especially those that are particularly complex.”
