Balluku: Uninterrupted power supply maintained despite record consumption during summer peak

TIRANA, Aug 22 /ATA/ Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku said that despite the record increase in energy consumption during the summer season, the supply standards were fully maintained across the country, including in key tourist areas.

Energy Minister Belinda Balluku said that despite record-high demand this summer, electricity supply across Albania — including key tourism areas — was maintained at the highest standards without compromise.

She noted that electricity consumption reached a record high during the summer of 2025.

“Electricity consumption from January to July 2025 increased by 2.2 per cent compared to 2024 (41,885 MWh more). Compared to 2023, the rise reached 10.3 per cent, or more than 184,151 MWh. In June and July alone, consumption was up 21.5 per cent and 30.7 per cent respectively, compared to 2019, the last year before the pandemic and the energy crisis. The highest daily consumption ever recorded was on 13 August 2025, at 27,995 MWh, surpassing 31 December for the first time as the day with the highest demand of the year,” said Balluku.

The minister also underlined the difficulties faced by the energy sector during the summer, particularly from wildfires that threatened substations and transmission lines.

Balluku noted that OST and OSHEE teams remained on full alert throughout the summer, working not only to repair the grid but also to help extinguish fires and protect strategic energy assets.

Albania’s power grid saved about €7 million this year as technical losses dropped by 1.45%, equivalent to 21,699 MWh of energy, Energy Minister Belinda Balluku announced.

She said the improved performance strengthens the energy sector and creates room for further reductions in household electricity tariffs, following the 10.5% cut introduced at the start of 2025.

Looking ahead, Balluku said the focus will be on expanding capacity and integrating into the regional market. She noted that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy is advancing key initiatives to expand generation, transmission, and distribution capacities in order to meet rising demand and enable full participation in the regional power market.

Balluku concluded by pledging continued efforts to ensure reliable and sustainable energy services throughout the year, not just during the summer peak.
