TIRANA, Aug 6 /ATA/ – Former Albanian President Ilir Meta has demanded to be released from pre-trial detention, after Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) wrapped up a high-profile investigation against him this week.
Lawyers for the former head of state on Wednesday requested Meta’s release from pre-trial detention, arguing there is no longer a procedural basis to hold him in custody after prosecutors concluded investigations and formally filed charges.
Meta, currently leader of the Freedom Party, has been in custody since October 2024 over alleged corruption and money laundering in connection with the CEZ/DIA case and lobbying activities in the United States.
SPAK, Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, has charged Meta with money laundering, passive corruption of senior officials, and false asset declarations.
Meta has rejected all allegations, calling them politically motivated and insisting there is no criminal evidence against him.
