Speaker Spiropali honors poet Ndre Mjeda: “His work is cornerstone of national identity”

TIRANA, Aug 1 /ATSH/ – Speaker of Parliament Elisa Spiropali commemorated Dom Ndre Mjeda, a prominent figure of Albania’s National Renaissance, on the anniversary of his passing on August 1, 1937.

In a message shared on social media, Spiropali described Mjeda as a brilliant contributor to Albanian culture and language, whose work added “strength, beauty, richness, and dignity” to the national identity.

“The legacy of Ndre Mjeda is a cornerstone in building our national identity,” Spiropali said.

“He was a voice that awakened the suppressed conscience of Albanians, a rare defender of our culture and language. As a teacher, poet, translator, clergyman, and patriot, Mjeda served his nation with a mind enlightened by knowledge and a heart inspired by ideals of liberty and the Albanian language.”

A key participant in the Congress of Manastir (1908), Mjeda was part of the commission that standardized the Albanian alphabet.

Spiropali noted that Mjeda’s legacy lives on through his lyrical and patriotic poetry, quoting one of his best-known verses from “Gjuha Shqype” (The Albanian Language).
