Albania to launch national reference laboratory in pharmaceutical research

TIRANA, July 24 /ATA/ – Albania’s Ministry of Education and Sports, in cooperation with the University of Medicine in Tirana, will establish a national reference laboratory in pharmaceutical sciences, aimed at strengthening scientific research infrastructure and innovation.

Speaking at the project presentation on Thursday, Education Minister Ogerta Manastirliu said the investment marks a strategic step for the academic, healthcare, and pharmaceutical sectors, aligning with European pharmacopoeia standards.

“This laboratory will conduct over 70% of the pharmaceutical analyses required by the European Pharmacopoeia and serve as a national reference point,” Manastirliu said, adding that it will also support PhD programs, international accreditation efforts, and income generation for the university.

The facility- co-financed by the government and the University of Medicine – will provide quality testing for medicines, cosmetics, and supplements, along with certification for medicinal plants and cannabis products in line with European standards and Albanian law.

The laboratory will directly benefit the Faculty of Pharmacy, University Hospital Centre, the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices, the Institute of Public Health, and the growing pharmaceutical industry.

According to Manastirliu, Albania has funded 181 scientific research and innovation projects this year, including 55 co-financed with the academic diaspora, aiming to enhance research capacity and better connect academia with industry.
