Rama: Transition to a cashless economy within this decade is our goal

TIRANA July 18 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Friday that the Albanian government aims to phase out the use of physical cash by the end of this decade and switch to digital transactions and interactions.

During a meeting held in the city of Berat with representatives from technology, innovation, and startups, as part of the vision “Albania 2030 in the European Union,” the PM emphasized that this is an ambitious goal requiring significant efforts.

“We have the ambition that by the end of this decade, Albania will be a cashless country. The technology is available, and if we know how to properly map out the path ahead of us, this is entirely achievable. A cashless Albania will free the country from a huge burden of hassle in daily life,” Rama stated.

The Prime Minister, in his address, underscored the significance of cooperation between institutions and the technology sector. He stressed the necessity of restructuring the Agency of Innovation and Excellence to establish a functional framework that fosters open and comprehensive cross-sector collaboration.

He said, “We need to take the Innovation Agency to the next level. The hubs created for each sector should not remain closed but be open and flexible to include, in real time, everyone from the respective sector who wants to contribute.”

The meeting in Berat took place as part of discussions on the challenges and priorities Albania must address to fulfill its goals toward European integration and the complete modernization of Albanian society.
