Surgeons at University Hospital perform successful surgery on patient with large aortic aneurysm

TIRANA, July 9 /ATA/ – Surgeons at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center (QSUT) in Tirana have successfully performed a successful surgery on young woman with large aortic aneurysm, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Albana Koçiu, said on Wednesday.

Health Minister said in a social media post that a 28-year-old woman with a large, 9-centimeter aortic aneurysm has been successfully treated at Albania’s largest university hospital centre recently.

The complex surgery was performed by Professor Altin Veshti and Dr. Klodian Krakulli without the need for an artificial valve, sparing the patient from lifelong blood-thinning medication.

The aneurysm was initially discovered incidentally during an X-ray in northern Albania. The patient was urgently transferred to the capital for surgery.

Surgeons removed the damaged section of the aorta and replaced it with a synthetic graft, while repairing the aortic valve.

According to medical staff, the technique, applied successfully in 17 cases at the Mother Teresa University Hospital Centre, marks progress in cardiac surgery in the country.

The patient has since recovered well and resumed normal life, officials said.
