Kosovo lawmakers to make another attempt to establish parliament amid political deadlock

PRISHTINA, July 7 (ATA) – Kosovo’s parliament is set to reconvene on Sunday in the 43rd attempt to formally constitute its ninth legislature, following months of political gridlock.

The latest session follows a failed meeting on Saturday evening, July 5, which had been delayed earlier in the day due to a false bomb threat.

Despite a ruling by Kosovo’s Constitutional Court requiring lawmakers to complete the formation of parliament by July 26, MPs have so far failed to elect a speaker and form legislative bodies. The constitutive session first opened on April 15, with elected MPs taking their oaths, but no further progress has been made.

The deadlock stems from disagreements over the election of the Assembly Speaker. The ruling coalition, led by Vetëvendosje and its allies Guxo and Alternativa, has been unable to secure the 61 votes needed in an open ballot to elect Albulena Haxhiu as speaker.

The bloc has called for a secret ballot, a move opposed by other parliamentary parties.

Both domestic and international actors have urged Kosovo’s political leaders to resolve the impasse. President Vjosa Osmani has held several meetings with party representatives in recent weeks, but efforts to break the deadlock have so far failed.
