TIRANA, June 26 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha stated Tuesday that the request for a recount of votes from the May 11 parliamentary elections in Albania has been filed by the candidates and not by the main opposition party itself.
Speaking at a press conference, Berisha underlined that the push for election transparency reflects a broader struggle to restore free and fair voting in Albania.
The opposition leader praised the recount for promoting transparency and called it a legitimate step whenever doubts about vote counting arise.
“I reiterate that the vote recount is not a demand by the Democratic Party, but by its candidates, whose right to verify their votes must be fully respected,” Berisha said.
He reiterated the party’s position that “votes died before reaching the ballot box,” suggesting that some votes for one DP candidate may have been transferred to another.
Berisha declared that the “May 11 farce cannot be hidden by any propaganda” and condemned those who criticize the opposition for exposing electoral fraud, calling them “the shame of Albania.”
“The opposition will never hesitate to denounce vote rigging and drug cartels; it will continue to fulfill its duty,” he concluded.
