Albania establishes Water Resources Management Agency

TIRANA, June 19 /ATA/ – Albania’s Council of Ministers on Thursday approved the creation of the Water Resources Management Agency, tasked with overseeing sustainable governance and strategic use of the country’s water resources.

Operating under the Prime Minister’s authority and funded by the state budget and other legal sources, the agency will manage water basins, support environmental protection, and promote economic efficiency in water use.

The agency ensures a comprehensive, effective, and harmonized strategic framework for marine environmental protection, coordinating efforts with national institutions and relevant authorities in other countries with which Albania shares sovereignty over parts of the Mediterranean Sea.

It also leads the process of optimizing water resource use for economic benefit, aligned with national priorities, usage needs, and criteria for the quantitative and qualitative protection of water resources.

It will coordinate with national and international institutions on marine protection, assess risks such as nitrate pollution and flooding, and oversee implementation of water management and monitoring plans.
