Foreign Minister: Albania at its best moment to join European family

TIRANA, June 18 /ATA – By Maela Marini/ – Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, stated Wednesday that Albania is at its best moment to join the European Union amid ongoing global security challenges.

Speaking in a televised interview, Foreign Minister Hasani commented on the progress of Albania’s EU integration process and recent developments in the Middle East, emphasizing that countries like Albania are poised for rapid accession given the evolving geopolitical landscape.

“Albania is currently in its strongest position to join the European family swiftly, amid security challenges and multiple global issues facing the European Union,” Hasani said.

Hasani confirmed that the opening of Chapter 5 in Albania’s EU accession process and the 6th Intergovernmental Conference are expected imminently, describing it as a matter of days.

“It is a matter of days—this concerns technicalities related to finding a date on the European Commission’s calendar. Both the member states, the Commission, and all involved mechanisms have agreed that Albania will open Chapter 4. This will happen in a matter of days; there is no longer any doubt,” he affirmed.

According to Albania’s diplomacy chief, “the EU clearly recognizes the need for countries like Albania to join as soon as possible.”

Commenting on the Middle East crisis, Foreign Minister affirmed the safe evacuation of five Albanian nationals from Israel to Athens, with continued cooperation to assist Kosovo citizens as well.

Regarding Albania-Iran relations, Hasani noted that diplomatic ties remain severed. Asked whether there are Albanian nationals currently in Iran wishing to return back home, he also said no requests for assistance have been made.

He emphasized Albania’s commitment to peace and support for Israel, while condemning terrorist organizations such as Hamas.
