Albania’s protected areas record 867,000 visitors in first four months of 2025

TIRANA, May 29 /ATA/ – Albania’s protected areas saw a rise in visitors in the first months of 2025,  driven by the growing interest in nature tourism and the natural beauty of the areas.

The Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro announced in remarks at a meeting on Thursday that protected areas across Albania attracted more than 867,000 visitors in the first four months of 2025 or 60,000 visitors more than during the same period of the previous year.

“We can learn more about the protected areas, the gems of our nature, thanks to an army of more than 800 tourist guides, but now also thanks to the digital platform www.albaniantrails.al, which is the outcome of steady cooperation between the National Agency for Protected Areas and GIZ Albania partners that will continue to advance new projects for protected areas over,” Kumbaro said.

There’s a growing emphasis on sustainable tourism within protected areas, aiming to manage visitor numbers effectively while preserving biodiversity and enhancing local communities.

Forest and tree cover and the protected areas, an oasis of the biodiversity, have increased to cover 21.5% of the country’s territory.

Protected natural and tourist areas in Albania are considered as protected land and water areas due to the biodiversity of the natural and cultural assets they offer.
