TIRANA, May 27 /ATA/ – Construction is in full swing at the new National Theatre complex in Tirana with work expected to complete within this year.
Prime Minister Edi Rama took to the social media on Tuesday to share images showing the ongoing construction work as the 9,300 m² contemporary venue, designed to host local and touring theatre companies in the Albanian capital, is increasingly taking its final shape,
“The ongoing work on the construction site of the National Theatre, which is increasingly taking shape as another jewel in the crown of architectural projects that have transformed the capital,” PM Rama wrote.
The bow tie-shaped National Theatre of Albania, designed by Denmark-based Bjarke Ingels Group – one of the world’s largest architecture studios – is a three in one cultural venue tailored to Tirana’s thriving theatre and performance art scene.
Located prominently on the cultural axis and in a mostly pedestrian zone, BIG’s design for the National Theatre of Albania seeks to reclaim and reinforce the city’s goal for more urban gathering places in Tirana. The new Theatre building is designed to provide optimum conditions for the stage actors and spectators, but it is also set to become one of the most beautiful theatre buildings in Europe.
The bow tie-shaped volume on the outside clearly divides the three main spaces or the functioning areas in a theatre building: Front of House, or the area where visitors can interact with the theatre spaces, including the hall, foyer, black box; the Back-of-House area designed to host the administrative and technical activities, as well as the needed premises for the actors, and the centre or the main auditorium that will connect the two buildings. The main auditorium will be located in the middle, sandwiched by the front-of-house activities facing south, and all of the back-of-house activities and services to the north. Thanks to the shape, the building will house four performance spaces and the new theatre will have a capacity of 1514 seats.
