TIRANA, May 26 /ATA/ The opening of more than 8 new chapters in the third cluster related to competitiveness and inclusive growth represents another important milestone in Albania’s EU accession negotiations.
This cluster represents inclusive growth for well-being and includes eight areas, among them Chapter 29, the Customs Union.
According to the General Directorate of Customs, in the document published by the European Commission following the conclusion of the fourth intergovernmental conference between the European Union and Albania in Brussels, regarding Chapter 29 – the Customs Union, the EU acknowledges Albania’s progress in aligning with European legislation in the customs field, particularly in customs debt, import and export procedures, customs valuation, and controls on travelers’ luggage.
The EU requires Albania to further align its legal framework with Union regulations, strengthen administrative and technological capacities, remove fees for customs scanning, and develop IT systems in accordance with European standards.
The EU also recognizes the anti-corruption measures and the commitment to combat smuggling, particularly of tobacco products.
Aligning with the EU Customs Acquis is vital for membership and involves complying with compulsory legislation for all member states, such as the EU Customs Code, common tariffs, anti-counterfeiting measures, and cooperation on customs matters. /j.p/sm/
