PRISHTINA, May 13 /ATA/ – Kosovo’s post-election parliament failed for a 15th time on Tuesday to elect a new Speaker.
The latest attempt by the ruling Vetevendosja to form a commission to oversee the secret vote for election of the new Speaker failed again to gain support from lawmakers of other political parties.
The session chair Avni Dehari again invited the political parties to propose the members of an ad-hoc commission to oversee the secret ballot for the post. The session ended after only 56 lawmakers voted for establishment of the commission.
A new parliament session was scheduled to take place on May 15.
Vetëvendosje’s nominee, Albulena Haxhiu, has repeatedly fallen short of the 61 votes required.
Kosovo’s Assembly remains stalled at the crucial step of electing the Speaker, a prerequisite for forming the new cabinet.
Vetëvendosje, which won the election in February and holds the exclusive right to nominate the Speaker, insists it will not replace Haxhiu as its candidate. Talks with other parties have failed to yield a consensus.
