PM Rama: EU has set 2027 as deadline for Albania to complete accession negotiations

TIRANA, May 5 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Monday that the European Union (EU) has set a deadline of 2027 for completion of Albania’s accession negotiations.

The government head, also leader of the Socialist Party (SP), underscored the May 11 vote’s national importance, warning against any setbacks that could jeopardize the negotiation process.

Rama said Albania should seize this moment when Albania’s domestic circumstances match with the current EU’s state of affairs, warning that the EU door won’t remain forever open.

“The EU’s enlargement policy completely changed and a deadline has been set for Albania to complete the accession negotiations between 2024 and 2027, saying that EU will accept Albania as a new member if the country delivers,” Rama said.

“We should not waste time and not allow EU states to provide alibis. Once we complete the accession negotiations in 2027, the process is then forwarded to parliaments of EU member states to ratify membership and the process can no longer be blocked,

The government head underlined that geopolitics also plays decisive role, but EU accession negotiations are real.

“They grant you nothing for geopolitical reasons. They don’t allow you in for this reason. They can only give you the chance by opening the door, but you should be totally ready,” he said.
