TIRANA, April 15 /ATA/ – A feasibility study for a new railway line project connecting the Albanian port city of Durres and the Kosovo capital of Prishtina was unveiled a day ago.
Durrës-Prishtina railway is considered one of the most important infrastructure projects for the Albanian nation and the region’s economy as a whole.
Prime Minister Edi Rama took to the social media on Tuesday to post the planned route of the “Red and Black Railway”, which will pass from Durrës through Shkodra and then through Gjakova to end in Prishtina.
The government head said that the new railway project between Albania and Kosovo is already on the way.
The project is expected to significantly boost economic ties, trade and travel between Albania and Kosovo.
Durrësi-Prishtina railway is important not only for commercial transport as it connects the port of Durrës with the dry port of Prishtina, but also for alternative transport as it creates more travel alternatives between the two countries.
With the feasibility study now complete, an international tender will be jointly launched to embark on construction of the new railway between the two countries.
Durrës-Prishtina railway is part of the government’s integrated development plan for northern Albania and its route through Shkodra is meant to ensure the city benefits from large-scale state investments.
The railway will connect with Corridor VIII as well as Corridor X, as well as with the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor, turning it into a connecting hub of the three European corridors and giving it a special importance for the entire economic and geopolitical development of Southeast Europe.
