Berisha vows to change “unfair” pension calculation formula within three months, if elected

TIRANA, April 4 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha vowed Friday to change the current “unfair” pension formula in the first three months of a centre-right government if the main opposition party wins the May 11 parliamentary election in Albania.

Speaking at a press conference, Berisha pledged to put an end to “unfair calculation formula of pensions for Albanian retirees,” saying the pension law is absurd as it denies social insurance contributions for many people.

“Albanian citizens should know that the pension law contains absurdities, arbitrariness, as it denies social insurance contributions,” opposition leader said, claiming that Socialist government has deprived thousands of people of their pension right.

Berisha also promised to set “a living wage of 200 euros per month, which will benefit over 520 000 retired people, who currently receive less than 200 euros.”

DP leader said that pensioners attending a meeting with him earlier today also welcomed the proposed consumer and other incentives in the opposition’s program.

According to Berisha, “the Pensioners Association said that if the outgoing government was to pursue the previous government’s trend in pension hike, the average monthly pension would have been 210 euros.”
