Work underway to establish direct flights to U.S.

TIRANA, April 3 /ATA/ – Work is already underway as Albania is set to establish direct flights to the United States, Prime Minister Edi Rama affirmed as he responded to questions during his “Sy m’Sy” social media segment on Thursday.

Responding to a commenter, who reminded PM Rama of his “promise to establish trans-Atlantic flights and the Tirana-New York City direct flights, the government head said that work has begun to deliver on this goal.

Rama said he had never promised that Tirana-New York flights will become operational within 2025, but he affirmed that “work process with the Federal Aviation of the United States and Tirana Airport is already underway, yet the process will take its time.”

Last year, PM Edi Rama announced in New York that Tirana International Airport is in active negotiations with Delta Air Lines, a major U.S. airline, to initiate direct flights between Albania and the United States. Although no specific timeline has been given, Rama suggested that the process is moving forward, with the inaugural flight likely originating from New York.

“I haven’t promised that direct flights will begin within 2025. I have promised to kick off the process and the process is already underway. However, it remains to be seen whether the inaugural flight will take place within 2025. I am looking forward to seeing this happening by end of 2025, but it remains to be seen in the process,” Rama said.
