Spiropali: Our objective, EU membership by end of current decade

TIRANA, April 3 /ATA/ The Albanian Parliament organized today the second high-level meeting “Albania 2030 in the EU – The Path of Reforms”.

Speaker of the Parliament Elisa Spiropali stated that, “We cannot build a European Albania without a European Parliament and an Assembly that functions only according to European standards, only in a society that has these standards itself”.

“Our objective of joining the European family by the end of this decade and concluding technical negotiations within 2027 has already been made public, not only in Albania, but also in European institutions and in member states, and has gained their full support over the years,” said Spiropali.

“We are in a historical momentum, which we must use and are using to place, within this decade, the star of Albania among the 27 stars of Europe. Therefore, now that political forces are getting ready to run for the May 11 general elections, let us consider this election campaign as an opportunity to join our natural European family more quickly,” she said.

Speaking about the work of the Special Commission, in the three pillars: Good Governance, Anti-Corruption, Rule of Law, and the synergy and interaction between them, Spiropali stated that it has followed with increased attention the recommendations related to the consolidation of democratic institutions in Albania, and in this context, it has also improved the functions of the activity of the Assembly.

Spiropali underlined that, “The Assembly is strengthening oversight, transparency, inclusive participation, accountability and efficiency, contributing to Open Governance aiming at the interaction of the three branches: legislative, executive and judicial”.

Spiropali stated that, “The Assembly will continue to decisively lead the membership of the country in the European Union, contributing in particular to guaranteeing democratic legitimacy and strengthening the inclusive nature of the process. In this context, we will consider the experts’ proposal for the establishment of permanent consultative councils within the Assembly on issues of national strategic interest, expanding the practice of the functioning of the National Council for European Integration”./r.e//a.f/p.s./
