TIRANA, March 18/ATA/ Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation Blendi Gonxhja announced that the funds for the social housing program will be increased 10-fold. During a conference on the Social Housing Program held today, he said that there will be more funds for municipalities that do not have the means.
Albania has one of the highest rates of home ownership in Europe. According to the 2023 Census data, 82.5% of Albanian families live in homes they own and only 8.8% live in rented homes. The rest live free of charge in homes owned by their relatives.
As a result, throughout the transition period, housing policy in Albania has generally been oriented towards the people in needy and marginalized groups.
Gonxhja highlighted the new Social Housing Policy according to which the private sector transfers 3% of the building they construct or the cash equivalent to municipalities for social housing. Thanks to this policy, there has been created a public stock of social housing of 117,823 m2. This is available to the municipalities while there has been accumulated a fund of over 35 million Euros.
Since the adoption of the 2018 law, a total of 22,840 families or 82 thousand citizens have benefited from the social housing programs.
Minister Gonxhja said that during 2025, following the Ministry’s call for investments, there have been received applications from 43 municipalities with a total of 55 housing projects. /a.f/p.s./
