EP discusses report on Albania’s EU accession progress

TIRANA, March 18 /ATA/ – The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday discussed a report presented by Rapporteur Andreas Schieder on Albania’s EU accession progress.

In a post on the social media, the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament lauded Albania’s progress on its path towards the EU.

“Albania is advancing well on its path towards the EU, shows this year’s report on the country’s preparedness for EU membership,” the Socialists and Democrats group said on social media platform X.

“However, several challenges still need to be addressed to achieve the ambitious, yet realistic, goal to be ready for the EU by 2030,” the Socialists group said citing Schieder’s report.

MEPs praised justice system reforms and the crackdown on high-level corruption launched by the Special Anticorruption and Anticrime Prosecution Structure (SPAK).

Some of MEPs underlined that Albania still faces a series of key challenges, including internal political polarization, and called for stronger and constructive political dialogue.

They also emphasized the need for implementation of the OSCE/ODIHR and Venice Commission recommendations, stating the May 11 elections will be a key test of Albania’s commitment to democratic standards.
