TIRANA, March 8 /ATA/ – The Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha has announced an initiative to eradicate women’s poverty and address women’s economic empowerment by investing in social protection and high-quality public services if his main opposition party wins the May 11 general elections in Albania.
Unveiling the DP program on women and girls’ empowerment on the International Women’s Day on Saturday, Berisha and opposition experts, assisted by Konrad Adenauer Foundation, saying that Albanian society is profoundly indebted to women and girls.
According to him, Albanian women are going through hard times, as they receive lowest wages and pensions.
“With their income, around 41% of the families are unable to provide for and feed their children properly, because they live in limits of extreme poverty. This is a dramatic situation for Albanian mothers and women,” Berisha said.
Berisha pledged that his opposition DP would “tear down the wall of patriarchy” if elected in the upcoming elections.
He said that a “compassion package will primarily seek to tackle extreme poverty among hundreds and thousands of women in Albania.”
“The compassion package, as we have named it, will put an end to extreme poverty,” Berisha said, pledging that mothers will also receive payment for their children.
He also promised fiscal incentives and financial support for women’s economic empowerment.
