TIRANA, Feb 21 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ Ilirjan Celibashi, the State Election Commissioner, stated on Friday that the collaboration with SPAK and the General Prosecutor is focused on ensuring smooth conduct of May 11 elections, while underscoring that the responsibilities of each institution remain unchanged.
At a roundtable organized by civil society regarding the May 11 elections, Celibashi stated, “Every institution must be mindful of where we are with the elections in Albania and where we need to go, and focus on sharing responsibilities.”
Celibashi emphasized, “We are very late, and the time has run out to discuss what should have been ideal from a regulatory standpoint.”
As the institution responsible for organizing and administering the electoral process, Celibashi assured that, “We are doing our best to ensure that the May 11th elections meet the standards required of a candidate country seeking to join the EU.”
“We are working on this in collaboration with other stakeholders, without altering the regulatory framework. We are not crafting new rules, laws, or institutional practices,” he stated.
Speaking about the collaboration with SPAK and the General Prosecutor, Celibashi mentioned that the three institutions are coordinating their efforts without altering anything regarding their individual areas of responsibility.
“This initiative comes with the good intention of ensuring that the elections in Albania are free from the negative traits of an electoral process that is not free, fair, or honest. I want to emphasize that this initiative is not driven by any external or internal influences, as might have been the case in the past, when the government had control over the institutions, even the independent ones, and coordinated their actions,” Celibashi added.
