State Minister: Electoral Code changes remove hurdles to diaspora voting for first time in Albania’s elections

TIRANA, Feb 18 /ATA/ – The Minister of State for the Relations with Parliament, Taulant Balla, said Tuesday that adoption of amendments to the Electoral Code in parliament on Monday evening finally clears the way to diaspora voting for the first time in Albania’s elections on May 11.

In a video message via the Prime Minister Edi Rama’s social media show “Sy m’sy,” Balla underlined that the sweeping reform ultimately delivers on the government commitment to cover all postal costs for overseas ballots ahead of the May 11 elections.

The State Minister also noted that changes to the electoral law also addressed other issues of administrative nature, saying that the central election body will have 60 days available to successfully complete the expats voting process.

He voiced optimism about the increasing number of Albanian expats already registering to cast their ballots in the May 11 general elections in the country.

Albania’s parliament passed unanimously (111-0) a series of changes to the Electoral Code, slashing bureaucracy and covering all postal costs for overseas ballots and allowing diaspora voting for the first time in the country’s elections.

The new law ensures ballots sent from abroad are counted by a bipartisan commission, eliminating cost barriers and logistical issues.
