TIRANA, January 18/ATA/ The leader of the Democratic Party Sali Berisha spoke today about the registration of the Diaspora in the May 11 elections, while he considered the Socialist Party’s hesitation to accept the biometric documents of the European Union member states absurd.
In a press conference, Berisha stated that, “Now it is the time for biometrics, and these documents cannot be put into question in an absolute way by the Albanian authorities”
“They have international certification. If we follow this logic, that only those who have Albanian biometrics will vote, in this way you can exclude two-thirds of the people in emigration and diaspora from voting. But, however, negotiations are continuing”, said Berisha.
Meanwhile, according to him, the DP has requested an increase in the number of operators who handle the data of the registered emigrants.
“CEC has pledged that this increase will happen immediately, but the CEC is commanded, in one way or another, by the Socialist Party, which does the utmost to delay this process. The increase of operators in the processing of data is one of the serious problems”, he added.
Asked about the primaries in the DP, Berisha said that the party has a statute and he will implement it. He assured that the competition will open very soon. “There is a DP statute that is above me. That statute was unanimously approved. I am not the statute; I am the person who implements the statute. Different opinions are acceptable, but the statute will be implemented. As you can see, there is a very large concentration on the Diaspora vote and in fact we have decentralized it. So there are in contact many of our leaders, local and central, who are both in Albania and in other countries so that we can register as many of our voters abroad as possible.
