TIRANA, Dec 16 /ATA/ – The U.S. United States Chargé d’Affaires Nancy VanHorn said Monday that Albania’s judicial vetting process has set an example for other countries in the region to follow.
Speaking at the conference “7 years of transitional re-evaluation of judges and prosecutors in the Republic of Albania,” which also marked the end of the term of the Independent Qualification Commission and the Public Commissioner, the U.S. diplomat noted that the justice system reform was met with a resistance over and over and such resistance continues at some extent.
“Since 2018, commissioners have zealously worked to re-evaluate integrity of judges and prosecutors in Albania and, by doing so, they have set a standard and an example, not only in Europe, but also in a wider region that are following the suit with this very tough, yet promising process as a path towards a just society,” VanHorn said.
“We also notice this has not been an easy feat, as justice reform was met with strong resistance and such resistance is unabated,” she stated.
Praising vetting commissioners, she said that Albanian citizens should know that government officials are being held accountable and accountability will continue.
