EU Integration, Pirdeni: 2030 is not an unfounded political statement

TIRANA, Dec 7 /ATA/ Minister of State for Public Administration and Anti-Corruption, Adea Pirdeni, highlighted Albania’s “satisfactory progress in opening negotiations,” emphasizing that the goal of EU membership by 2030 is not an unfounded political statement.

In a televised interview, Pirdeni emphasized that “during this period not only the Albanian government, but also all institutions engaged in the negotiation process have performed satisfactorily to kick-start the negotiations.”

She explained, “This relates to the clusters that cover the foundations of the rule of law, including the functioning of democratic institutions, reforms, and the essential pillars that are crucial in demonstrating a country’s progress.”

However, according to the minister, the work is far from over; on the contrary, it will intensify even further in the coming period. “The entire team responsible for these tasks will be even more committed in the upcoming period to stay true to our final goal,” the minister emphasized.

Pirdeni further stated that the 2030 deadline for Albania’s EU membership is neither a political slogan nor an unfounded declaration.

“In fact, 2030 is not just a political slogan or an unfounded statement. It was first inspired by a resolution from the European Parliament in July 2023, which calls on the European Commission, the Albanian government, and all relevant institutions to prepare for Albania’s EU accession within this decade. A highly ambitious agenda has been established, aiming not only to open all negotiation clusters by 2025 but also to provisionally close them by 2027, to be followed by the preparation for the accession process with the signing of the accession treaty. This is an agenda we have agreed upon with our partners,” she stated.

The Minister stated that the process is not simple and as such requires the involvement of all institutions to move forward.

“The process is not simple and requires the participation of all responsible actors in the market in Albania. Additionally, civil society plays a role, and the media also has a very important function in maintaining the positive momentum that Albania has built to advance in the negotiation process,” emphasized Pirdeni.
