TIRANA, Dec 4 /ATA/ The Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku stated on Wednesday that the majority lacks the resolve to combat corruption and adopt laws that enhance transparency.
At a conference organized by USAID and CSDG on whistleblowers and corruption reporting, Tabaku stated that the actions of the majority not only undermine parliamentary democracy but also penalize those who report corruption.
She emphasized that the law on conflicts of interest, a key initiative for enhancing accountability, has been blocked for a long time in the Law Committee and has not been included in the parliamentary agenda for debate. “The Parliament has become a source of tailor-made laws, while initiatives for transparency are stalled,” she stated.
Tabaku also mentioned specific cases that show how the whistleblower law, although correct in theory, is a failure in practice. She emphasized that the system is designed to penalize and discourage those who report corruption, creating an environment where whistleblowers become victims of the system rather than being protected.
She also criticized the adhoc parliamentary committees, labeling them as superficial and ineffective. In her view, these committees have failed to take any action to tackle clientelist legislation that erodes the foundations of democracy and promotes the close interests of those in govt.
