Raising awareness and commitment to environmental governance and security

TIRANA, October 22/ATA/ 86% of those interviewed in the national survey on environmental governance and security in Albania said that they are deeply concerned about environmental issues and 73% of them said that they have witnessed environmental damage in the areas where they live.

The biggest problems are related to air, water and soil pollution (31%), forest destruction (20%) and weak institutional response to environmental violations (32%).

Based on the results of this survey, the OSCE Presence in Albania launched today from Librazhdi a campaign to raise awareness and commitment to environmental governance and security. During a meeting, the representatives of civil society, local institutions, young people and the academic world discussed on forest issues.

The campaign, which will run until December, focuses on key topics such as forest management, gender issues and the environment, environmental corruption, wildfires, illegal logging, the economic impact of environmental crime and youth engagement in strengthening environmental governance.

The next stations are Gjirokastra, Dropulli, Shkodra, Maliqi, Devolli and Korça.

The survey and the campaign are part of the OSCE Presence project “Strengthening governance and environmental security in Albania”, which is financially supported by Norway, France and Italy.
