Celibashi: Improvement of law on monitoring financing of political parties

TIRANA, October 16/ATA/ State Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi said today that there is room to improve the legal mechanism for monitoring the financing of political parties.

While reporting to the Special Commission for Disinformation, the Commissioner Celibashi said that CEC monitoring process is based only on the empirical data declared by the political parties, but it is impossible to proceed with an in-depth investigation on those figures that the electoral subjects have presented.

Celibashi requested that the Assembly and political parties address this concern through relevant changes to the Electoral Code.

“Regarding the financing from foreign entities or foreign states, I will have to accept and I believe you know very well that it is difficult, if not impossible for the CEC to get information with this type of financing.

“It would be naive for anyone to receive information through the mechanisms of the CEC and to evaluate and monitor the financing that comes from illegal, criminal activities or even from foreign countries. So far, the CEC has not received any report, even indirectly, regarding this issue.

Opposition was again absent at the meeting of the Special Commission “To coordinate and supervise all institutional actions to combat disinformation and other forms of foreign interference in the country’s democratic processes”. /r.e/a.f/p.s./
