Rama: Türkiye was the first to recognize independence of Kosovo

TIRANA, Oct 10 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Thursday that Türkiye was the first to recognize the independence of Kosovo.

In a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Rama said that after this visit and such an important moment, which is capped with the opening of the Grand Mosque of Tirana, also known as the Namazgah Mosque, the President will head to Belgrade.

“I would like to bring to your attention a historical fact. The Republic of Türkiye , when President Erdoğan was Prime Minister, was the first to recognize Kosovo. But it wasn’t just an official and diplomatic recognition; it was a recognition of the Republic of Kosovo in real time, in sync with the proceedings of the Kosovo parliament. While the entire government, with the then Prime Minister and today President, gathered and the deputies of Kosovo raised their hands to approve independence, the government of the Republic of Türkiye recognized Kosovo.”

“So, Rama added, the Republic of Kosovo cannot find anywhere else a more indisputable friend on all days than Türkiye and President Erdoğan.'”

“We share the concern that the situation between the two states needs to improve and that dialogue should prevail,” said Rama, referring to Kosovo and Serbia.

“I say it in the presence of a personality who has had and continues to have dialogue as the most common tool for working with everyone,” emphasized Rama.
