One year since Banjska attack in Kosovo

TIRANA, Sept 24 /ATA/ – One year ago today, armed Serb militants launched an attack on Kosovo Police in the village of Banjska, triggering a significant escalation in tensions between Kosovo and Serbia.

Shortly after midnight of September 24, Kosovo Police responding to a blockade by two unmarked trucks on the bridge in Banjska village, Zveçan Municipality, were ambushed by a group of gunmen. Armed to teeth, Serbian criminals had entered the territory of Kosovo. The initial exchange resulted in injuries to three officers, including Afrim Bunjaku, who later died.

Following the ambush, the attackers sought refuge in the historic Banjska Monastery. Kosovo security forces eventually surrounded the site, leading to the deaths of three militants during a subsequent operation.

September 24 marks one of the worst days in recent history of Kosovo. Kosovo Police were under a terrorist attack.

Kosovo authorities have condemned the attack as an act of terrorism, implicating Serbian nationalist Milan Radoičić, who remains in Serbia. A total of 45 individuals have been indicted in connection with the attack, but few have been arrested due to their location in Serbia.

The European Parliament has also condemned the incident as a terrorist act and raised concerns about potential Serbian involvement in political unrest in Kosovo.
