Spiropali in Skopje: Albanian language is essence of Albanians identity; let Ohrid agreement be implemented

TIRANA, September 23/ATA/ Speaker of the Assembly Elisa Spiropali stated today during a joint press conference with her Macedonian counterpart Afrim Gashi that violation of the Albanian language violates the identity of Albanians, while she added that this issue in North Macedonia should be resolved according to the Ohrid agreement.

Spiropali said that, “We expect and are hopeful that the law on languages in North Macedonia will be fully implemented”.

“The Albanian language, at least for us, is sacred and it has to do with the essence of our identity. Violating it in any form definitely hurts a lot and violates exactly this identity that we represent as our value in this big world, in the region and beyond”, said Spiropali.

“We are fully aware and understand the concerns about the possibilities of possible changes, depending on the anticipated decision of the Constitutional Court, but we expect that such disturbances will have a solution according to the spirit dictated by the Ohrid framework agreement”, she added.

Spiropali emphasized that, “The Albanian factor in North Macedonia continues to play a substantial role in maintaining the stability of the country”.

“The fair and proportional representation of Albanians in the institutions of the country, based also on this geopolitical reality of the region and in mutual interest, will continue, according to the contemporary democratic standards of a multi-ethnic society. This is one of the conditions that guarantee the efforts to build a functional multi-ethnic society, based on full implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement”, she added.

The Constitutional Court in North Macedonia is due to decide in September whether to confirm or repeal the law on languages, where Albanian is one of the official languages./p.s./
